Days of the Week in Chinese
Chinese-Language-PolyglotClub.jpg

Hi Chinese learners,

In Mandarin Chinese, there are 3 ways to tell the days of the week, like what is shown below:

  1. They can start with 星期 (xīng qī) week, which is 星(xīng)star + 期(qī) period.
  2. They can also start with 周(zhōu), the second way to say "week".
  3. The third way to say "week" is 礼拜 (lǐ bài), which literally means "worship".

➡ To say a specific day of the week (like Monday, Tuesday...), you just need to add a number after 星期, or 礼拜.

➡ If you want to say something like "one week" or "two weeks", you put numbers before them.

English Chinese #1 Chinese #2 Chinese #3
Monday 星期一 周一/週一 礼拜一/禮拜一
Tuesday 星期二 周二/週二 礼拜二/禮拜二
Wednesday 星期三 周三/週三 礼拜三/禮拜三
Thursday 星期四 周四/週四 礼拜四/禮拜四
Friday 星期五 周五/週五 礼拜五/禮拜五
Saturday 星期六 周六/週六 礼拜六/禮拜六
Sunday 星期日(星期天) 周日(周天)/週日(週天) 礼拜日(礼拜天)/禮拜日(禮拜天)

As you can see, only Sunday is different, it doesn't end in a number, it ends in 日(rì)day, or 天(tiān)sky
