Let's start with some basic expressions you can use to express surprise:

Example dialogue:
- Person 1: ຂ້ອຍທີ່ໄດ້ສົ່ງການດິນເດືອນໆ ນີ້ແມ່ນຫຍັງບໍ່? (Koy dtai song kan din deung nor ni mai?) (What do you think of the photos I sent you?)
- Person 2: ບໍ່ເວົ້າໄດ້ໜ້ອຍເທົ່າຈົນໃດເກີນສູງແລ້ວ! (Baw wei dai noy tha jone dai keung sung laew!) (You surprised me, they are amazing!)
Use these expressions to show your surprise and amazement in different situations.
Expressions using ມັກ[edit | edit source]
In Lao, you can also use the word "mak" to express surprise. Here are some expressions to use with "mak":

| ມັກຫຼາຍນີ້ນັ້ນສັນຍານເຂົ້າເວົ້າຄວາມເຫັນ!! | mak lai ni nan yaan khao khua ma enn! | This one is even more extraordinary! |
| ປະມານຜູ້ນີ້ນັ້ນຫຍັງເຮົາຍິນດ້ວຍຄວາມມັກຂອງເຮົາເຊັ່ນຄົບເຫັນ? | phamaan phu ni nan yoo nai yin dai wak mak khong hao saen khoh enn? | Why did we not think of this surprise? |
Example dialogue:
- Person 1: ຂ້ອຍສົ່ງບົດຮັບຈາກເດີ້ແດນ... (Koy song bode hup jark dengan...) (I received a letter from Dan...)
- Person 2: ມັກ! ຂ້ອຍທີ່ສົ່ງຊ້ອງເລີຍໝົດລວງສຸດເລີຍ! (Mak! Koy song song ley mot long sut ley!) (Wow! You received a letter after a long time!)
Use these expressions to show surprise when something exceeds your expectations.

Lao people takes surprise seriously. In fact, during special occasions such as weddings, the groom is expected to give a surprise gift to his bride. It is said that the more surprising the gift, the more love and attention it shows to his bride.
