Kabyle Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Kabyle learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Kabyle. We will look at the different forms of the verb and how to use them in sentences. We will also look at some examples of how to use the verb in context.

The verb "be" is used to express existence, identity, or a state of being. In Kabyle, the verb "be" is conjugated differently depending on the subject of the sentence. The verb "be" is conjugated as follows:

Person Singular Plural
First yemma temma
Second temma temma
Third yemma yemma

For example, if the subject of the sentence is "I", then the verb "be" would be conjugated as "yemma". If the subject of the sentence is "you", then the verb "be" would be conjugated as "temma".

Here are some examples of how to use the verb "be" in sentences:

  • Person 1: Yemmaɣ-d tikli? (Where are you?)
  • Person 2: Temmaɣ-d tesga. (I am here.)
  • Person 1: Yemmaɣ-d tikli n tmeɣra? (Where are you from?)
  • Person 2: Temmaɣ-d tesga n tmurt n At Yennayer. (I am from the country of At Yennayer.)
