The genitive case in Georgian

The genitive case is produced by the suffix “-ის”.

Words ending on “-ნ-”, “-რ-”, “-ლ-”, “-მ-” with “ო-”, “ა-”, “ე-” vowels in front of them lose these vowels. In other words, the last vowels are missing in words ending on: -ან-, -ენ-, -ონ-, -ამ-, -ემ-, -ომ-, -არ-, -ერ-, -ორ-, -ალ-, -ელ-, -ოლ-.

  • Compare: ბავშვი – ბავშვ-ის and მეგობარი – მეგობრ-ის, სოფელი სოფლ-ის.
