The words "tu" and "vous" both mean you. Which word for you is used depends on the person being addressed.

The use of "tu" is for family, friends or among young people. In other cases it can be considered rude to  people.

So a policeman ,a detective won't say never "hello",alway "good morning!" "bonjour" and not "salue!". Girls,women don't say "salut"(hello) to the first contact,or a person who don't know you.
