The "tu" in french, is only for the persons that you know very well, a member of family, your friends ,and boy/girlfriend,not more the "vous" is the persons who you don't know, and the first contact.,a the persons high promoted, ranked, your teacher , your boss, your manager for example. So a policeman ,a detective won't say never "hello",alway "good morning!" "bonjour" and not "salue!". Girls, women don't say "salut"(hello) to the first contact,or a person who don't know you. In France, the people dislike the "salut"and the "tu" coming from person who don't know them.
