What is the difference between "to give up" and "to abandon"?

Give up[edit | edit source]

To Give up, means to quit, as if you are doing some kind of hard work and you think you can´t do it, you give up/you quit.

Abandon[edit | edit source]

Abandon means to leave someone or something behind you. If you leave your dog on the street and never go back for it, you are abandoning the dog.

Give up AND Abandon[edit | edit source]

One could give up hope, which is to say, "abandon" hope.
