Since and for both relate to when events happen.

Since

Use "since" to indicate the beginning of a time period until the present.

Since can only be used with the perfect tenses.

• I have known him since September.
• Amanda hasn’t been there since she was 20

For

Use for when you’re talking about how long something happens.

For can be used with all tenses.

• I have known him for 2 months.
• Amanda hasn’t been there for 10 years.
