Introduction

In this lesson, we will learn Tigrinya vocabulary for everyday actions, such as eating, drinking, working, and sleeping, as well as their corresponding verbs. As a Tigrinya language teacher with 20 years of experience, I will incorporate cultural information and interesting facts to make this lesson more engaging for you.

Verbs for Everyday Actions

Here are some of the most common verbs used for everyday actions in Tigrinya:

Tigrinya Pronunciation English
መጥፋት met'fat to eat
ኣምሓር amhar to drink
ተማሪ temari to sleep
ተጨማሪ tech'amari to wake up
ተሸንፎ tes'enfo to work
ጸልእት ts'liet to study
ኣሕዛብ ahzab to talk

Notice that each verb is written in Tigrinya script and followed by its pronunciation in English, written in Latin script. IPA or transliteration can also be used.

Now let's look at some sentences that use these verbs:

  • ኣምሓር እንተደልዩ || Amhar entedelyu || I want to drink.
  • መጥፋት ንብረት ድሕሪ ኣብ ግንቦት ይተሓማስኩ || Met'fat niberet dhri ab Gnobut ytihamasKu || I eat breakfast at 7 am.
  • ኢዩ ፍቃደንቲ ተማሪቲ ይተወሳስኩ || Iyu fkadenti temariti ytiwesasKu || He/she sleeps 8 hours every day.
  • ተሸንፎ ኣብ ምትክልቲ ብልጭቶ ኤርትራ ውሓት ይቕበልኩ || Tes'enfo ab Mtkhlti bl'chto Eritrea whamet yxibalku || I work in a hospital in Eritrea from 8 am to 5 pm.

Practice making your own sentences with these verbs, and try to incorporate other vocabulary you have learned in previous lessons.

More Everyday Actions

Let's learn some more vocabulary for everyday actions:

Now let's look at some sample sentences:

  • ጥበባዊ ተማረካ ንባብሰን ውልቃዊ ዘለዎ ነቲ ማእከላይ || T'bebawi temarreka n'babesn Wlka'wi zelwo neti ma'ekelay || They stand proudly in front of their newly built house.
  • ኢዩ ዘይተምረጺ ናይ ፕሮግራም ሳዕስዒ ሕፃናት ኣብ ግዜ ጀምርዎ ናይ ስደድ ጨቕ || Iyu zyti'merz'i na'y Program sa'asi Hs'anat ab Gzi j'mrw naw Sde'd c'eq || He/she is sitting comfortably in front of the computer, waiting for the rain to stop.
  • መባሕቲን ካብ ጀምሮ ዓይነት እንተመሰገንቲ መጥናጭን ይትማስኩ || M'bahtin kab j'mro aynit'mesegniti met'sengti met'tnach n ytmasksu || We walk around the city during the weekend for exercise.
  • ኣብ መርከብ ናብ መንበሬ ሽም መመልኦት ኣብ ውልቃዊ ኩባቢ ዝተረሳተሐት ብምሉእ ናይ ቤተ-ክርስቲያን ዝኾነ ይፍሲ || Ab mer'keb nab mnber tes'm milot ab Wlka'wi kubabi ziteresatehat bmlue na'y betekristyan zikone yefsi || In the car on the way back to my hometown after Church service, we had a lively discussion with my family.
