Translation:

Person A: How are you feeling today? Person B: I have a cough. Person A: What about the flu? Person B: I have a headache.

Dialogue 2:

Person A: Шәс аҳарҵа амаҵакуҩҵра и? (šas ahartha amaaṭ'akuṭ'cra i?) Person B: А, догәымхә иусын. (a, doghwy'mhwy iusyn.) Person A: Аҭҭыҵа устаҵыла, А Лоджра хазурсмаптым. (aṭṭyca ustacwyla, A Lodžra hazursmaptym.) Person B: Аа, шәахәын. (aa, šaaxwy'n.)

Translation:

Person A: Have you got diarrhea? Person B: Yes, I have diarrhea. Person A: Eat boiled rice and drink tea. Person B: Okay, thank you.

Grammar

In Abkhazian, adjectives generally come after the noun. For example:

  • араанаҩ атәыла. (araanaa'n atwyla.) – A bruise is blue.
  • ауара ала азыр / аҟәыр адәылтәа. (a'wara ala azyr / aqwy' r adhy' ltwa.) – I have a headache on the right / left side.

When using ош (osh) – a form of “that” – the adjective comes before the noun:

  • ош бааҧҧа аҭаҩала. (osh baap'p'a athaṭwala.) – That cough is dry.

Culture and Interesting Facts

When it comes to traditional medicine in Abkhazia, there are various medicinal plants that are used for natural remedies. Examples of such plants include hill peas, birch tree leaves, and oak bark. Traditional healers, known as aasănykəa, are respected members of the community and are often called upon to heal health issues.

As for modern medicine, Abkhazians have free access to medical care. There are several hospitals and clinics scattered throughout the country, including the Republican Clinical Hospital in the capital city of Sukhumi.
