Don't miss the chance to check out these pages as you wrap up this lesson: Negation & Questions.

Present Tense[edit | edit source]

In Southern Uzbek, we use the verb "bo'l-" to indicate the present tense of the verb "be". The verb can be used to describe the subject and to form a statement. Let's take a look at the examples:

Southern Uzbek Pronunciation English
Men o'qituvchiman. men o'qituvchiman I am a teacher.
Siz talaba bo'lsiz. siz talaba bo'lsiz You are a student.
U yaxshi odam. u yaxshi odam He is a good person.
Biz do'stimiz. biz do'stimiz We are friends.
Siz vaqtingizni sarflamadingiz. siz vaqtingizni sarfla-ma-din-giz You did not waste your time.
U o'qituvchi bo'lib ketdi. u o'qituv-chi bo-lib ket-di He became a teacher.

As you can see, we add the suffix "-man", "-siz", "-dir" to the end of the verb "bo'l-" to describe the subject. To form a negative sentence, we add the negative particle "emas" after "bo'l-". For example, "Men o'qituvchi emasman" means "I am not a teacher".

Past Tense[edit | edit source]

In the past tense, we use the verb "bo'ldi" to indicate the past form of the verb "be". Let's see how it is used in the sentences below:

Southern Uzbek Pronunciation English
Men o'qituvchi bo'ldim. men o'qituvchi bo'l-dim I was a teacher.
Siz talaba bo'lgan edingiz. siz talaba bo'l-gan e-din-giz You were a student.
U yaxshi odam edi. u yaxshi odam e-di He was a good person.
Biz do'stlar edik. biz do'st-lar e-dik We were friends.
Siz vaqtingizni sarflamagan edingiz. siz vaqtingizni sarflama-gan e-din-giz You did not waste your time.
U o'qituvchi bo'lib ketgan edi. u o'qituv-chi bo-lib ket-gan e-di He had become a teacher.

As you can see, we add the past tense suffix "-dim", "-dingiz", "-di" to the end of the verb "bo'ldi" to describe the subject. To form a negative sentence, we add the negative particle "emas" after "bo'ldi". For example, "Men o'qituvchi bo'l-ma-dim" means "I was not a teacher".

Let's practice our newly learned verbs with a conversation between two friends:

  • Person 1: Nima qilayapsiz? (What are you doing?)
