Slovak Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Slovak learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Slovak grammar. This is an important part of the language and understanding it will help you to communicate more effectively. We will look at how to form the conditional mood, when to use it, and some examples of its use.

Consider broadening your understanding by checking out these related lessons: Plurals, Slovak Grammar, Adjectives & Questions.

Forming the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is formed by adding the suffix -by to the verb stem. For example, the verb “byť” (to be) becomes “by som” in the conditional mood. The same applies to other verbs, such as “môcť” (to be able to), which becomes “mohol by som” in the conditional mood.

When to Use the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or a wish. It can also be used to express politeness or to make a suggestion. For example:

  • “Keby som mal viac času, rád by som šiel na dovolenku.” (If I had more time, I would like to go on vacation.)
  • “Mohol by si mi pomôcť?” (Could you help me?)
  • “Mali by sme sa pohnúť.” (We should get moving.)

Examples[edit | edit source]

Here are some more examples of the conditional mood in use:

  • “Keby som vedel, urobil by som to.” (If I had known, I would have done it.)
  • “Ak by som mal peniaze, kúpil by som si nové auto.” (If I had money, I would buy a new car.)
  • “Mohol by si mi poradiť?” (Could you give me some advice?)
  • “Mali by sme sa vrátiť domov.” (We should go home.)
