In this lesson, we will learn about colors in Lao language. Colors are so important in our daily life and it's also an important topic to know when learning a new language. We will also give some cultural information and fun facts about colors in Laos. So, let's get started! Basic Colors[edit | edit source]

Lao language has basic colors which are used to describe the color of things, objects or people. Here are some basic colors in Lao:

Lao Pronunciation English
ເພັງ /pʰəŋ/ white
ດີ /diː/ black
ຂີດ /kʰiːd/ green
ສີ /siː/ red
ຟ້າ /faw/ blue
ຖາມ /tʰam/ orange
ເສຍະ /seːa/ yellow

Fun Fact[edit | edit source]

Did you know that the color of the Buddhist flag in Laos is blue, white and red? Each color represents a concept. Blue symbolizes the Buddha's teachings, white represents purity and red represents the Buddha's absolute perfection.

There are more colors than the basic colors in Lao language. Here are some additional colors:

Color Idioms and Expressions[edit | edit source]

In Lao language, colors are also used in idioms and expressions. Here are some examples:

Lao Literal translation Meaning
ດີໂລກປອກ black shadow, white shadow someone who follows others' steps, without personality
ແຫລງໂລກຈອກ take a black shadow, take a white shadow always changing one's mind or opinion
ຕາເວັນວາງດີ evening sky is black the day is almost over, the end of something

Cultural Information[edit | edit source]

Did you know that Lao people believe that each individual has a certain color that represents his or her birth date? The color associated with the day of the week on which they were born is their lucky color. Here are the color of the days:

Monday ເຫັນໄຊ yellow-orange
Tuesday ສອງກັນ pink
Wednesday ພະຕັງກິນ green
Thursday ພະພາກ light brown
Friday ສະໝ້າ blue
Saturday ສຸກ grey
Sunday ພະວັນອາທິດ red

Here is an example conversation using colors:

  • Person 1: ສີດີຫຼີ້ນນັ້ນໄດ້ຂຽມແກ້ວ້. (/siː diː lûan nān dai ngiam kǽo/) (This black dress looks nice.)
  • Person 2: ດີແລ້ວຕໍ່ກອງນີ້ແມ່ນດັກ. (/diː lɛ́ːw tò khǭng nī mɛ̂ː nà dǎk/) (This shirt you are wearing is black.)
