Passing Items at the Table in Amharic

When you pass an item you say:[edit | edit source]

  • “ይኸው yïhäw” to mean “here you are”

and

  • ማቀበል mak΄äbäl to mean “to pass”.

Imperative forms of mak΄äbäl አቀብለኝ ak΄äbïläñ ♂ pass to me[edit | edit source]

  • አቀብይኝ ak΄äbïyiñ ♀
  • አቀብሉኝ ak΄äbïluñ (plural)
  • ያቀብሉኝ yak΄äbïluñ (polite/akïbïrot)

A less formal way to say “here you are” is also:[edit | edit source]

  • እንካ ïnka ♂
  • እንቺ/እንኪ ïnči / ïnki ♀
  • እንኩ/እንካቹ ïnk/ïnkačhu (plural)
