As a Tagalog language teacher for the past 20 years, I have found that learning a new language is always exciting. Today, we will be learning about the days of the week and months of the year in Tagalog. This is an essential part of Tagalog vocabulary and will help you in everyday conversations with native speakers.

Days of the Week

Let's start by looking at the days of the week in Tagalog. The names of the days of the week in Tagalog are influenced by Spanish language, which has a significant impact on Tagalog.

Here are the Tagalog names of the days of the week, along with their Spanish equivalents:

Tagalog Pronunciation Spanish English
Lunes loo-nes lunes Monday
Martes mar-tes martes Tuesday
Miyerkules mee-yer-koo-les miércoles Wednesday
Huwebes hoo-web-es jueves Thursday
Biyernes bee-yer-nes viernes Friday
Sabado sah-bah-do sábado Saturday
Linggo ling-go domingo Sunday
  • Note that Spanish "miércoles" and "jueves" have been Tagalized to "Miyerkules" and "Huwebes", respectively.

It is interesting to note that the Tagalog word for "week" is "linggo", which is the same as the Spanish word for "Sunday".

Now that you have learned the days of the week in Tagalog, let's move on to the months of the year.

Months of the Year

Tagalog also follows the Gregorian calendar for the months of the year. The names of the months in Tagalog follow a similar pattern to the days of the week, with some Spanish influence.

Here are the Tagalog names of the months of the year, along with their Spanish equivalents:

Tagalog Pronunciation Spanish English
Enero eh-ner-o enero January
Pebrero peb-er-o febrero February
Marso mar-so marzo March
Abril ah-bril abril April

Hunyo hoo-nyo junio June
Hulyo hoo-lyo julio July
Agosto ah-gos-to agosto August
Setyembre set-yem-bre septiembre September
Oktubre ok-too-bre octubre October
Nobyembre no-byem-bre noviembre November
Disyembre dee-sem-bre diciembre December
  • Note that Tagalog has added the letter "y" in months such as "Mayo", "Hunyo", and "Hulyo".

Learning the names of the days of the week and months in Tagalog will definitely help you in everyday conversations, especially when setting a meeting or scheduling an appointment. It is interesting to note that Filipinos still use the Spanish calendar, despite being under American rule for almost 50 years.

I hope you found this lesson informative and enjoyable. Don't forget to practice the days of the week and months of the year in Tagalog regularly to become comfortable using them in conversation.
