Lithuanian Vocabulary → Greetings and Introductions → Numbers 1-100

Hello everyone! In this lesson, we will learn how to count from 1-100 in Lithuanian and use these numbers in basic conversation. As a Lithuanian language teacher with 20 years of experience, I enjoy sharing cultural information and interesting facts throughout my lessons.

Let's get started with some basic numbers:

Numbers 1-10

Here are the numbers 1 to 10 in Lithuanian, along with their pronunciations and English translations.

Lithuanian Pronunciation English
vienas vyeh-nahs one
du doo two
trys trees three
keturi keh-too-ree four
penki pehn-ki five
šeši sheh-shi six
septyni sehp-tee-nee seven
aštuoni ahsh-too-oh-nee eight
devyni deh-vee-nee nine
dešimt deh-siimt ten

Remember to pay attention to the subtle nuances in pronunciation!

Let's now proceed to numbers 11-20:

Numbers 11-20

Here are the numbers 11 to 20 in Lithuanian:

Lithuanian Pronunciation English
vienuolika vyeh-nwoh-li-kah eleven
dvylika dvwi-li-kah twelve
trylika tri-li-kah thirteen
keturiolika keh-too-ryoh-li-kah fourteen
penkiolika pehn-kyoh-li-kah fifteen
šešiolika sheh-shyoh-li-kah sixteen
septyniolika sehp-tyoh-li-kah seventeen
aštuoniolika ahsh-too-oh-nyoh-li-kah eighteen
devyniolika deh-vyi-nyoh-li-kah nineteen
dvidešimt dvy-deh-shimt twenty

You may have noticed that instead of saying "eleven" and "twelve," Lithuanians use the words "vienuolika" and "dvylika". Once you get past 20, however, the numbers are formed by combining the word for the tens-place with the word for the ones-place (so, for example, "twenty one" is "dvidešimt vienas")

Numbers 20-100

Here are the numbers from 20 to 100 in Lithuanian:

Lithuanian Pronunciation English
dvidešimt dvy-deh-shimt twenty
trisdešimt tris-deh-shimt thirty
keturiasdešimt keh-too-ryahs-deh-shimt forty
penkiasdešimt pehn-kyahs-deh-shimt fifty
šešiasdešimt sheh-shyahs-deh-shimt sixty
septyniasdešimt sehp-tyahs-deh-shimt seventy
aštuoniasdešimt ahsh-too-oh-nyahs-deh-shimt eighty
devyniasdešimt deh-vyi-nyahs-deh-shimt ninety
šimtas shihm-tahs one hundred

Congratulations, now you know how to count in Lithuanian!

Counting Beyond 100

To count beyond 100, simply combine words as illustrated in the tables above. For example, "one hundred and twenty" would be "šimtas dvidešimt vienas".

Keep in mind that in Lithuanian, the numbers that come after 10s have different forms for masculine and feminine nouns.

In practice, you will mainly use numbers in practical conversation when giving information on time, phone numbers, addresses, dates, and prices. Additionally, it's easy to incorporate numbers when talking about age, family members, and birthdays.

I hope you found this lesson helpful, and feel confident in your ability to count in Lithuanian. Next time, we will continue studying the basics of Lithuanian grammar.

Until then, viso gero! (goodbye!)
