Thai Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Thai learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Thai grammar. This is an important concept to understand if you want to become a proficient speaker of the language. We will look at how to form sentences in the conditional mood, as well as some examples of how it is used in everyday conversation.

What is the Conditional Mood?

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or condition. It is often used to express a wish or desire, or to make a suggestion. In Thai, the conditional mood is formed by adding the particle ได้ (dai) to the end of a verb.

Examples

Here are some examples of how the conditional mood is used in everyday conversation:

  • ฉันอยากไปเที่ยวกันได้ (chan yàak bpai tiiaw gan dai) - I would like to go on a trip together.
  • ถ้าฉันมีเงินพอก็จะไปซื้อของให้เธอได้ (tâa chan mee ngern pŏr kŏr ja bpai sŭay kŏng hâi têu dai) - If I had enough money, I would buy something for you.
  • ถ้าฉันรู้วิธีทำแล้วก็จะทำได้ (tâa chan rúu wiithee tam láew kŏr ja tam dai) - If I knew how to do it, I would do it.

How to Form Sentences in the Conditional Mood

Forming sentences in the conditional mood is quite simple. All you need to do is add the particle ได้ (dai) to the end of the verb. For example:

  • ฉันจะไป (chan ja bpai) - I will go
  • ฉันจะไปได้ (chan ja bpai dai) - I would go

You can also use the conditional mood with other particles, such as กัน (gan) and กับ (gap). For example:

  • ฉันจะไปกัน (chan ja bpai gan) - We will go
  • ฉันจะไปกันได้ (chan ja bpai gan dai) - We would go
