Language/Armenian/Grammar/Negation
Hi Armenian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about negation in Armenian grammar. We will see how to use negative words and negate verbs, nouns, and adjectives. We will also learn how to use double negation and some common expressions with negation.
Negative Words
In Armenian, the most common negative word is "ոչ" (voch), which means "not". Other negative words are: "միայն" (miayn) - "only", "որպես" (vorpes) - "as", "ուրեմն" (uremn) - "never". For example:
Armenian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
ոչ | voch | not |
միայն | miayn | only |
որպես | vorpes | as |
ուրեմն | uremn | never |
We use "ոչ" (voch) to negate verbs, nouns, and adjectives. For example:
- Verb negation:
Armenian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
Եմ | yem | I am |
ոչ եմ | voch yem | I am not |
- Noun negation:
Armenian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
Արև | arev | sun |
Ոչ արև | voch arev | not sun |
- Adjective negation:
Armenian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
Կարող | karogh | possible |
Անհնար | anhnar | impossible |
We can also use double negation in Armenian, which is not considered as incorrect grammar. For example:
- Single negation:
Armenian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
Ես ուզում եմ | yes uzum em | I want |
Ոչ եմ ուզում | voch em uzum | I don't want |
- Double negation:
Armenian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
Չեմ ուզում | chem uzum | I don't want |
Ոչ չեմ ուզում | voch chem uzum | I don't not want (= I want) |
Be careful with double negation, because it can be confusing and misleading.
Common Expressions with Negation
Here are some common expressions with negation in Armenian:
- Չեմ գիտակցել (chem gittaktsel) - I don't understand
- Չեմ իմանալ (chem imanal) - I don't know
- Ոչ մի բան (voch mi ban) - Nothing
- Ոչ ոք (voch ok) - Nobody
- Ոչ միայն (voch miayn) - Not only
Example of a dialogue:
- Person 1: Չեմ գիտակցել: (Chem gittaktsel) - I don't understand.
- Person 2: Ինչպես այն աշխարհը պիտի փակվի: (Inchpes ayhn ashrkh pi ti pakestvi) - How it will be closed.
