Armenian Grammar - How to Use "Have"

Hi Armenian learners! 😊
In this lesson, you will learn how to properly use the verb "to have" in Armenian. Understanding this verb is important for building sentences and expressing possession, among other things.

Introduction

The verb "to have" is an important concept in any language. In Armenian, the verb "ունեմ" (oonem) is used to express possession, obligation, and other meanings. This verb is often used in combination with other words such as "ունեմ ժամ" (oonem zham) which means "to have time" and "ունեմ պարզապես" (oonem parzapess) which means "to be sure". In this lesson, we will explore the different ways in which "ունեմ" (oonem) can be used in Armenian.

The Basics

The verb "ունեմ" (oonem) is the first person singular present tense form of the verb "ունենալ" (oonenal) which means "to have". In Armenian, we use this verb to express possession, obligation, and other meanings.

Here are a few examples of "ունեմ" (oonem) being used in different contexts:

Armenian Pronunciation English
Ես կողքի* ունեմ: Yes koghi oonem. I have a book.
Ես ժամ* ունեմ: Yes zham oonem. I have time.
Մենք պիցցա ունենք: Menk pitzza oonenk. We have a pizza.
  • Note: In Armenian, we use different words for objects depending on their location. In this case, we use "կողքի" (koghi) meaning “nearby” instead of “book” and “ժամ” (zham) meaning "time" instead of “free time”.

Compound Tenses

In Armenian, we can also use the compound verb "ունեմ եմ" (oonem yem) to express different meanings, such as obligation or future actions.

Here are some examples of compound tenses using the verb "ունեմ" (oonem):

Ես մեքենա ունեմ: Yes mek'k'ena oonem. I have a car.

Ես հետևյալ օրերին պետք է աշխատեմ և ունեմ ժամ: Yes hetevyal orerin petk' e ashkhathem yev oonem zham. I need to work these days and I have time.
Ես մեկ ամիս հետո համաձայն պետք է եմ ունենալ այս գործողությունները: Yes mek amis heto hamajayn petk' e em unenal ays’ kor’koghot'yunner. According to the agreement, I need to have these actions in a month.

Dialogue

Here is a dialogue between two people to illustrate the use of the verb "ունեմ" (oonem):

  • Person 1: Այդ գործողությունները մեկ ամիս հետո պետք է կատարեմ: (Ayd gork’oghot’unner mek amis heto petk’ e kat’arem.) (I need to execute these actions in a month.)
  • Person 2: Հիմա ունե՞իք այդ պահին ժամ (Himah oonick’ ayd bahin zham)? (Do you have the time for it now?)
