Icelandic Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Icelandic learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Icelandic. We will look at the conjugation of the verb, as well as some examples of how it is used in sentences.

Conjugation

The verb "be" is an irregular verb in Icelandic. It is conjugated as follows:

Person Singular Plural
1st ég er við erum
2nd þú ert þið eruð
3rd hann/hún/það er þeir/þær/þau eru

Examples

Here are some examples of how the verb "be" is used in sentences:

  • Ég er frá Íslandi. (I am from Iceland.)
  • Við erum í Reykjavík. (We are in Reykjavík.)
  • Þú ert að tala íslensku. (You are speaking Icelandic.)
  • Hann er með vini sína. (He is with his friends.)
  • Hún er að lesa bók. (She is reading a book.)
  • Það er að borða mat. (It is eating food.)
  • Þeir eru að fara út. (They are going out.)
  • Þær eru að sofa. (They are sleeping.)
  • Þau eru að spila leik. (They are playing a game.)

Dialogue

Let's look at a dialogue between two people using the verb "be":

  • Person 1: Hvað ertu að gera? (What are you doing?)
  • Person 2: Ég er að tala íslensku. (I am speaking Icelandic.)
  • Person 1: Ertu að læra íslensku? (Are you learning Icelandic?)
  • Person 2: Já, ég er að læra íslensku. (Yes, I am learning Icelandic.)
