Serbian Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Serbian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Serbian. We will look at the conjugation of the verb and how it is used in different contexts. We will also look at some examples of sentences using the verb "be".

The verb "be" in Serbian is conjugated as follows:

Person Singular Plural
Ja (I) sam (am) smo (are)
Ti (you) si (are) ste (are)
On/ona/ono (he/she/it) je (is) su (are)
Mi (we) smo (are) smo (are)
Vi (you) ste (are) ste (are)
Oni/one/ona (they) su (are) su (are)

The verb "be" is used in many different contexts. It can be used to describe a person's identity or occupation, to describe a location, to describe the time, and to describe a state of being. Here are some examples of sentences using the verb "be":

  • Ja sam profesor. (I am a teacher.)
  • Ona je u Beogradu. (She is in Belgrade.)
  • To je ujutru. (It is in the morning.)
  • Oni su srećni. (They are happy.)

You can also use the verb "be" in questions. Here are some examples of questions using the verb "be":

  • Ko si ti? (Who are you?)
  • Gde je on? (Where is he?)
  • Kada je to? (When is that?)
  • Šta je ovo? (What is this?)
