Egyptian Arabic Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Egyptian Arabic learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Egyptian Arabic. This is an intermediate level lesson, so if you are a beginner, you may want to review some of the basics first.

The verb "be" is used to describe a state or condition. It is used to talk about what something is, or what someone is like. In Egyptian Arabic, the verb "be" is conjugated differently depending on the subject.

The verb "be" is conjugated as follows:

Subject Egyptian Arabic Pronunciation English Translation
I انا ana I am
You (singular) انت inta You are
He/She/It هو/هي/أنه huwa/hiya/anhu He/She/It is
We نحن nahn We are
You (plural) انتم intum You are
They هم hum They are

Let's look at some examples of how to use the verb "be" in Egyptian Arabic.

  • Person 1: انا مشغولة (ana mishghoolah)
  • Person 2: انت بخير؟ (inta bikhair?)

Translation:

  • Person 1: I am busy.
  • Person 2: How are you?
  • Person 1: هو مصري (huwa masri)
  • Person 2: نحن مصريين (nahn masriyin)

Translation:

  • Person 1: He is Egyptian.
  • Person 2: We are Egyptians.
