Indonesian Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Indonesian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Indonesian. We will look at the different forms of the verb and how to use them in sentences. We will also look at some examples of how to use the verb in context.

The verb "be" is used to express existence, identity, or location. In Indonesian, the verb "be" is expressed using the verb "ada". The verb "ada" can be conjugated into different forms depending on the subject of the sentence.

The following table shows the different forms of the verb "ada":

Kamu ka-mu ada You are
Dia di-a ada He/She/It is

The verb "ada" can be used in a variety of ways. Here are some examples of how to use the verb in context:

  • Person 1: Di mana kamu? (Where are you?)
  • Person 2: Saya ada di sini. (I am here.)
  • Person 1: Siapa yang ada di sana? (Who is there?)
  • Person 2: Dia ada di sana. (He/She/It is there.)
  • Person 1: Apa yang kamu lakukan? (What are you doing?)
  • Person 2: Saya ada di rumah. (I am at home.)
  • Person 1: Apa yang mereka lakukan? (What are they doing?)
  • Person 2: Mereka ada di sekolah. (They are at school.)

As you can see, the verb "ada" can be used to express existence, identity, or location. It is an important verb to know when learning Indonesian.
