Language/Southern-kurdish/Grammar/Adjectives
Hi Southern Kurdish learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in Southern Kurdish. Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns. They can be used to give more information about the noun or pronoun they are modifying. In this lesson, we will look at how adjectives are formed in Southern Kurdish, as well as how they are used in sentences.
Formation of Adjectives
Adjectives in Southern Kurdish are formed by adding suffixes to nouns and verbs. The suffixes used depend on the gender and number of the noun or pronoun being modified. For example, the suffix -î is added to nouns to form masculine singular adjectives, while the suffix -în is added to form feminine singular adjectives.
Masculine Singular
The suffix -î is added to nouns to form masculine singular adjectives. For example, the noun 'xanî' (house) becomes 'xanîî' (big house).
Feminine Singular
The suffix -în is added to nouns to form feminine singular adjectives. For example, the noun 'zarok' (child) becomes 'zarokîn' (big child).
Masculine Plural
The suffix -îyan is added to nouns to form masculine plural adjectives. For example, the noun 'dost' (friend) becomes 'dostîyan' (big friends).
Feminine Plural
The suffix -îyên is added to nouns to form feminine plural adjectives. For example, the noun 'kal' (dog) becomes 'kalîyên' (big dogs).
Usage of Adjectives
Adjectives in Southern Kurdish are usually placed before the noun or pronoun they are modifying. For example, the sentence 'Ez xanîî bîm' (I have a big house) uses the adjective 'xanîî' (big house) to modify the noun 'xanî' (house).
Adjectives can also be used to compare two or more nouns or pronouns. For example, the sentence 'Xanîî zorî zorîyên e' (The big house is bigger than the small houses) uses the adjective 'zorî' (big) to compare the noun 'xanîî' (big house) with the noun 'zorîyên' (small houses).
Adjectives can also be used to describe the state or condition of a noun or pronoun. For example, the sentence 'Xanîî qewimî' (The house is clean) uses the adjective 'qewimî' (clean) to describe the state of the noun 'xanîî' (big house).
