Thai Grammar - Plurals

Welcome to the Thai Grammar - Plurals lesson! In this lesson, you will learn how to form plurals in Thai. Plurals are an important part of any language, and understanding them is essential for speaking and writing Thai correctly.

Overview

In Thai, there are two ways to form plurals: by adding a suffix or by using a special plural word. Let's take a look at each one in more detail.

Suffixes

The most common way to form plurals in Thai is by adding a suffix. The suffixes used depend on the type of word being pluralized. For example, nouns are usually pluralized with the suffix พวก (pûak). Here are some examples:

  • คน (kon) - person → คนพวก (kon pûak) - people
  • ห้อง (hông) - room → ห้องพวก (hông pûak) - rooms
  • รถ (rót) - car → รถพวก (rót pûak) - cars

Verbs are usually pluralized with the suffix ๆ (tâe). Here are some examples:

  • เขียน (kîan) - to write → เขียนๆ (kîan tâe) - to write (plural)
  • ทำ (tam) - to do → ทำๆ (tam tâe) - to do (plural)
  • พูด (pûut) - to speak → พูดๆ (pûut tâe) - to speak (plural)

Adjectives are usually pluralized with the suffix กว่า (kwâa). Here are some examples:

  • ใหญ่ (yài) - big → ใหญ่กว่า (yài kwâa) - bigger
  • ดี (dii) - good → ดีกว่า (dii kwâa) - better
  • เร็ว (réo) - fast → เร็วกว่า (réo kwâa) - faster

Special Plural Words

Another way to form plurals in Thai is by using special plural words. These words are used to refer to groups of people or things. Here are some examples:

  • คนละคน (kon lâ kon) - each person
  • ทั้งหมด (táng mòt) - all
  • ทั้งสอง (táng sǎwng) - both
  • ทุกคน (túk kon) - everyone
  • บางคน (bâang kon) - some people

It's important to note that these words can also be used with other words to form more complex phrases. For example, you can say ทุกคนทั้งหมด (túk kon táng mòt) to mean "everyone".
