Assamese Grammar - Plurals

Hi Assamese learners!😊
Learning Assamese Grammar can be a challenging task, but it is also an incredibly rewarding one. In this lesson, we will focus on the formation of plurals in Assamese.

Formation of Plurals

In Assamese, there are two ways to form plurals: by adding suffixes or by reduplication.

Suffixes

The most common way to form plurals in Assamese is by adding suffixes. The most common suffixes are -গুলি (-guli) and -রা (-ra).

For example, the singular form of the word পাখি (paki) is পাখির (pakir), and the plural form is পাখিগুলি (pakiguli).

Another example is the singular form of the word গাছ (gach) is গাছে (gache), and the plural form is গাছেরা (gachera).

Reduplication

The other way to form plurals in Assamese is by reduplication. This means repeating the same word twice.

For example, the singular form of the word গাছ (gach) is গাছ (gach), and the plural form is গাছগাছ (gachgach).

Another example is the singular form of the word পাখি (paki) is পাখি (paki), and the plural form is পাখিপাখি (pakipaki).

Now that you know how to form plurals in Assamese, it's time to practice! Here are some examples for you to try:
