Telugu Grammar - Negation

Hi Telugu learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about negation in Telugu. We will look at how to form negative sentences and how to use the negative particle లేదు (lēdu).

Negation is a way of expressing the opposite of something. In Telugu, we use the negative particle లేదు (lēdu) to express negation. This particle is placed before the verb in a sentence. Let's look at some examples:

Telugu Pronunciation English Translation
నేను తిండి nēnu tiṇḍi I am not going
నేను చెప్పలేదు nēnu cēppalēdu I am not speaking
నేను కాదు nēnu kādu I do not have
నేను చేయలేదు nēnu cēyalēdu I am not doing

We can also use the negative particle లేదు (lēdu) with adjectives and adverbs. For example:

Telugu Pronunciation English Translation
అది తెలుసుకోలేదు adi tēlusukōlēdu It is not clear
అది ఎంతో వేగంగా ఉంటుంది లేదు adi ēṃtō vēgaṃgā uṇṭuṃdi lēdu It is not very fast
అది అనుకున్నారు లేదు adi anukunnāru lēdu They do not understand
అది సరిగా ఉండేదు లేదు adi saraigā uṇḍēdu lēdu It is not correct

We can also use the negative particle లేదు (lēdu) with nouns. For example:

Telugu Pronunciation English Translation
అది ఒక కథ లేదు adi oka katha lēdu It is not a story
అది ఒక పదం లేదు adi oka padaṃ lēdu It is not a word
అది ఒక విషయం లేదు adi oka viṣayaṃ lēdu It is not a topic
అది ఒక ప్రశ్న లేదు adi oka praśna lēdu It is not a question
