Language/Armenian/Grammar/Future-Tense
Hi Armenian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Armenian. We will look at how to form the future tense, as well as some examples of its use.
The future tense in Armenian is formed using the verb stem and the suffixes -ում/-եմ. The suffix -ում is used for the first person singular (I) and third person plural (they), while the suffix -եմ is used for the second person singular (you) and first and second person plural (we, you).
For example, the verb գիտել (to know) has the following forms in the future tense:
Person | Singular | Plural |
---|---|---|
I | գիտեմում | գիտեմում |
You | գիտեեմ | գիտեմ |
He/She/It | գիտեում | գիտեմում |
We | գիտեմ | գիտեմում |
You | գիտեմ | գիտեմ |
They | գիտեում | գիտեմում |
The future tense can be used to talk about actions that will take place in the future. For example:
Armenian | Pronunciation (IPA) | English Translation |
---|---|---|
Ես կգիտեմում անգլերեն | /jɛs kəɡitʰemum ɑnɡɫɛɾɛn/ | I will learn English |
Մենք կգիտեմ | /mɛnkʰ kəɡitʰem/ | We will know |
Նա կգիտեում հայերեն | /nɑ kəɡitʰum hɑjɛɾɛn/ | He/She/It will know Armenian |
Դուք կգիտեմ | /dukʰ kəɡitʰem/ | You will know |
Նրանք կգիտեում հայերեն | /nɾɑnkʰ kəɡitʰum hɑjɛɾɛn/ | They will know Armenian |
The future tense can also be used to talk about intentions or plans. For example:
Armenian | Pronunciation (IPA) | English Translation |
---|---|---|
Ես կգիտեմում անգլերեն դասընթաց | /jɛs kəɡitʰemum ɑnɡɫɛɾɛn dɑsəntʃɑt͡sʰ/ | I will learn English classes |
Մենք կգիտեմ հայերեն | /mɛnkʰ kəɡitʰem hɑjɛɾɛn/ | We will know Armenian |
Նա կգիտեում հայերեն խոսումներ | /nɑ kəɡitʰum hɑjɛɾɛn xosumner/ | He/She/It will know Armenian conversations |
Դուք կգիտեմ հայերեն լեզուն | /dukʰ kəɡitʰem hɑjɛɾɛn lɛzun/ | You will know the Armenian language |
Նրանք կգիտեում հայերեն գրականություն | /nɾɑnkʰ kəɡitʰum hɑjɛɾɛn ɡɾɑkɑnuˈt͡sʰjun/ | They will know Armenian literature |
As you can see, the future tense is a very useful tool for talking about the future in Armenian. With practice, you will be able to use it confidently in your conversations.
