Hi Afrikaans learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the gender rules in Afrikaans. We will look at the rules, examples, practice and a quiz. Let's get started!

Rules

In Afrikaans, nouns are either masculine or feminine. There are some rules that can help you determine the gender of a noun.

  • Nouns ending in -a are usually feminine.
  • Nouns ending in -e are usually masculine.
  • Nouns ending in -ie are usually feminine.
  • Nouns ending in -er are usually masculine.
  • Nouns ending in -or are usually masculine.
  • Nouns ending in -uur are usually masculine.

Examples

The following table shows some examples of nouns and their genders:
