Language/Ukrainian/Grammar/Gender
Hi Ukrainian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the gender of nouns in Ukrainian. We will look at the rules for determining the gender of nouns, and then practice with some examples. Finally, we will take a quiz to test our understanding.
Rules
The gender of a noun in Ukrainian is either masculine, feminine, or neuter. There are some general rules that can help us determine the gender of a noun.
- Masculine nouns usually end in a consonant, such as друг (friend).
- Feminine nouns usually end in -а, -я, or -ь, such as книга (book).
- Neuter nouns usually end in -о, -е, or -і, such as слово (word).
However, there are some exceptions to these rules. For example, some nouns ending in -а are masculine, such as дядя (uncle). It is important to learn the gender of each noun when you learn it.
