Tagalog Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Tagalog learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Tagalog. We will look at how to form sentences in the future tense and how to use them in everyday conversations.

The future tense in Tagalog is used to talk about actions that will happen in the future. It is formed by using the verb root and adding the suffix -um- or -m-. For example, the verb root for "to eat" is kain, so the future tense of "to eat" is kakain.

Let's look at some examples of sentences in the future tense:

Tagalog Pronunciation English Translation
Magkakain ako ng hapunan. mak-ka-kain ah-ko ng ha-pu-nan I will eat dinner.
Maglalakad sila sa parke. mak-la-la-kad see-la sa par-ke They will walk in the park.
Magbabasa siya ng libro. mak-ba-ba-sa see-ya ng lee-bro He will read a book.
Magsasalita ako sa klase. mak-sa-sa-lee-ta ah-ko sa kla-se I will speak in class.
Magtatrabaho sila sa opisina. mak-ta-tra-ba-ho see-la sa o-pee-see-na They will work in the office.

The future tense can also be used to make predictions about the future. For example:

Tagalog Pronunciation English Translation
Magiging maganda ang panahon bukas. ma-gee-ging ma-gan-da ang pa-na-hon boo-kas The weather will be nice tomorrow.
Magiging masaya ang araw na ito. ma-gee-ging ma-sa-ya ang a-raw na ee-to Today will be a happy day.
Magiging malaki ang bahay nila. ma-gee-ging ma-la-kee ang ba-hay nee-la Their house will be big.
Magiging mahusay ang pag-aaral niya. ma-gee-ging ma-hoo-say ang pag-a-a-ral nee-ya His studies will be good.
Magiging matagumpay ang negosyo nila. ma-gee-ging ma-ta-gum-pay ang ne-go-syo nee-la Their business will be successful.

The future tense can also be used to express wishes or hopes for the future. For example:

Tagalog Pronunciation English Translation
Maging matagumpay ka. ma-ging ma-ta-gum-pay ka May you be successful.
Maging masaya ka. ma-ging ma-sa-ya ka May you be happy.
Maging malusog ka. ma-ging ma-loo-sog ka May you be healthy.
Maging mapayapa ang mundo. ma-ging ma-pa-ya-pa ang mun-do May the world be peaceful.
Maging matagumpay ang lahat. ma-ging ma-ta-gum-pay ang la-hat May everyone be successful.
