Japanese Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Japanese learners! ๐Ÿ˜Š
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Japanese. We will look at how to form sentences in the future tense, as well as some common expressions and examples.

The future tense in Japanese is used to express an action that will take place in the future. It is formed by adding the particle ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) to the verb stem. For example, the verb ใ€Œ่กŒใใ€ (iku) means "to go". To form the future tense of this verb, we add ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) to the verb stem ใ€Œ่กŒใ€ (i): ใ€Œ่กŒใชใ‚‹ใ€ (inaru).

The particle ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) can also be used with nouns and adjectives. For example, the noun ใ€Œๅฎถใ€ (ie) means "house". To form the future tense of this noun, we add ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) to the noun stem ใ€Œๅฎถใ€ (ie): ใ€Œๅฎถใชใ‚‹ใ€ (ienaru).

The particle ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) can also be used with adjectives. For example, the adjective ใ€Œ้™ใ‹ใ€ (shizuka) means "quiet". To form the future tense of this adjective, we add ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) to the adjective stem ใ€Œ้™ใ‹ใ€ (shizuka): ใ€Œ้™ใ‹ใชใ‚‹ใ€ (shizukanaru).

The particle ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) can also be used with adverbs. For example, the adverb ใ€Œๆ—ฉใใ€ (hayaku) means "quickly". To form the future tense of this adverb, we add ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) to the adverb stem ใ€Œๆ—ฉใใ€ (hayaku): ใ€Œๆ—ฉใใชใ‚‹ใ€ (hayakunaru).

The particle ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) can also be used with conjunctions. For example, the conjunction ใ€Œใใ—ใฆใ€ (soshite) means "and". To form the future tense of this conjunction, we add ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) to the conjunction stem ใ€Œใใ—ใฆใ€ (soshite): ใ€Œใใ—ใฆใชใ‚‹ใ€ (soshitenaru).

The particle ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) can also be used with interjections. For example, the interjection ใ€Œใ‚ˆใ†ใ€ (you) means "let's". To form the future tense of this interjection, we add ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) to the interjection stem ใ€Œใ‚ˆใ†ใ€ (you): ใ€Œใ‚ˆใ†ใชใ‚‹ใ€ (younaru).

The particle ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) can also be used with pronouns. For example, the pronoun ใ€Œใ‚ใชใŸใ€ (anata) means "you". To form the future tense of this pronoun, we add ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) to the pronoun stem ใ€Œใ‚ใชใŸใ€ (anata): ใ€Œใ‚ใชใŸใชใ‚‹ใ€ (anatanaru).

The particle ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) can also be used with particles. For example, the particle ใ€Œใฏใ€ (wa) means "is". To form the future tense of this particle, we add ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) to the particle stem ใ€Œใฏใ€ (wa): ใ€Œใฏใชใ‚‹ใ€ (wanaru).

The particle ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) can also be used with auxiliary verbs. For example, the auxiliary verb ใ€Œใ„ใ‚‹ใ€ (iru) means "to be". To form the future tense of this auxiliary verb, we add ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) to the auxiliary verb stem ใ€Œใ„ใ‚‹ใ€ (iru): ใ€Œใ„ใ‚‹ใชใ‚‹ใ€ (irunaru).

The particle ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) can also be used with other verbs. For example, the verb ใ€Œ้ฃŸในใ‚‹ใ€ (taberu) means "to eat". To form the future tense of this verb, we add ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) to the verb stem ใ€Œ้ฃŸในใ€ (tabe): ใ€Œ้ฃŸในใชใ‚‹ใ€ (tabenaru).

Here are some examples of sentences in the future tense:

Japanese Pronunciation English Translation
ๆ˜Žๆ—ฅ่กŒใชใ‚‹ Ashita inaru I will go tomorrow
ๅฎถใชใ‚‹ Ienaru I will have a house
้™ใ‹ใชใ‚‹ Shizukanaru It will be quiet
ๆ—ฉใใชใ‚‹ Hayakunaru It will be quick
ใใ—ใฆใชใ‚‹ Soshitenaru And then
ใ‚ˆใ†ใชใ‚‹ Younaru Let's
ใ‚ใชใŸใชใ‚‹ Anatanaru You will
ใฏใชใ‚‹ Wanaru Is
ใ„ใ‚‹ใชใ‚‹ Irunaru Will be
้ฃŸในใชใ‚‹ Tabenaru I will eat

In conclusion, the future tense in Japanese is formed by adding the particle ใ€Œใชใ‚‹ใ€ (naru) to the verb stem. This particle can also be used with nouns, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, interjections, pronouns, particles, auxiliary verbs, and other verbs.
