Igbo Vocabulary - Fruits

In this lesson, we will learn the most important Igbo words related to fruits. Knowing these words will help you to understand and communicate better in Igbo.


Fruits are an important part of our diet and culture. In Igbo, there are many words for different types of fruits. Here is a list of some of the most common fruits in Igbo:

ọkpa ɔ́kpà Plantain
ụkwụ ʊ́kwʊ́ Banana
ọchịchị ɔ́chíchí Orange
ọmụmụ ɔ́mʊ́mʊ́ Apple
ọmụọkpụ ɔ́mʊ́ɔ́kpʊ́ Pineapple

You can also use the Igbo words for colors to describe the color of the fruit. For example, if you want to say "red apple", you can say "ọmụmụ ndị ọhụrụ" (ɔ́mʊ́mʊ́ ndí ɔ́hʊ́rʊ́).

It is also important to know how to ask for fruits in Igbo. Here are some useful phrases:

  • "Ndị ọkpa bụ n'ihi na-agba?" (Ndí ɔ́kpà bú n'íhì ná-àgbà?) - Where can I buy plantains?
  • "Ndị ụkwụ bụ n'ihi na-agba?" (Ndí ʊ́kwʊ́ bú n'íhì ná-àgbà?) - Where can I buy bananas?
  • "Ndị ọchịchị bụ n'ihi na-agba?" (Ndí ɔ́chíchí bú n'íhì ná-àgbà?) - Where can I buy oranges?
