Marathi Grammar - Negation

Hi Marathi learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about negation in Marathi. Negation is the process of making a statement negative. It is an important part of Marathi grammar and can be used to express a variety of meanings.

Negation is formed by adding the suffix नको (nako) to the verb. This suffix changes the meaning of the verb from affirmative to negative. For example, the verb खाऊ (khāū) means "to eat", while खाऊनको (khāūnako) means "not to eat".

The following table shows some examples of negation in Marathi:

Marathi Pronunciation English Translation
जाऊ jāū to go
जाऊनको jāūnako not to go
काढू kāḍhū to do
काढूनको kāḍhūnako not to do
पाहू pāhū to see
पाहूनको pāhūnako not to see

Negation can also be used to express a variety of other meanings. For example, it can be used to express doubt or uncertainty. For example, the sentence मी जाऊनको आहे (mī jāūnako āhe) means "I am not sure if I will go".

Negation can also be used to express prohibition. For example, the sentence तुम्ही खाऊनको नाही (tumhī khāūnako nāhī) means "you must not eat".

Negation can also be used to express refusal. For example, the sentence मी काढूनको आहे (mī kāḍhūnako āhe) means "I refuse to do it".

Negation can also be used to express disbelief. For example, the sentence तुम्ही पाहूनको आहे (tumhī pāhūnako āhe) means "I don't believe you".

Negation can also be used to express surprise. For example, the sentence तुम्ही जाऊनको आहे (tumhī jāūnako āhe) means "you are not going?".

Negation can also be used to express a lack of knowledge. For example, the sentence मी काढूनको जाणत नाही (mī kāḍhūnako jāṇat nāhī) means "I don't know how to do it".

Negation can also be used to express a lack of ability. For example, the sentence मी पाहूनको शकत नाही (mī pāhūnako śakat nāhī) means "I cannot see".

Negation can also be used to express a lack of desire. For example, the sentence मी खाऊनको इच्छित नाही (mī khāūnako icchit nāhī) means "I don't want to eat".

Negation can also be used to express a lack of understanding. For example, the sentence मी जाऊनको समजत नाही (mī jāūnako samajat nāhī) means "I don't understand why I should go".

Negation can also be used to express a lack of willingness. For example, the sentence मी काढूनको आग्रही नाही (mī kāḍhūnako āgrhī nāhī) means "I am not willing to do it".

Negation can also be used to express a lack of interest. For example, the sentence मी पाहूनको आवडत नाही (mī pāhūnako āvaḍat nāhī) means "I am not interested in seeing it".
