Slovak Grammar - Negation

Hi Slovak learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be discussing the basics of negation in Slovak. We will look at how to form negative sentences, as well as some common expressions and phrases used to express negation. Let's get started!

Basics of Negation

Negation in Slovak is quite straightforward. To form a negative sentence, you simply need to add the word nie (no) before the verb. For example:

  • Ja nie som v škole. (I am not in school.)
  • Oni nie sú tu. (They are not here.)

It is important to note that the word nie must agree with the subject of the sentence. For example:

  • My nie sme v škole. (We are not in school.)
  • Vy nie ste tu. (You are not here.)

In addition to the word nie, there are several other words and phrases that can be used to express negation in Slovak. Some of the most common ones are listed below:

Slovak Pronunciation English Translation
nikdy nik-dee never
nikto nik-toh nobody
nič neech nothing
ani ah-nee neither
ani jeden ah-nee yed-en not even one

For example:

  • Nikdy som tu nebol. (I have never been here.)
  • Nikto tu nie je. (Nobody is here.)
  • Nič som nevidel. (I saw nothing.)
  • Ani jeden človek tu nie je. (Not even one person is here.)

Common Expressions

In addition to the words and phrases listed above, there are several other expressions that are commonly used to express negation in Slovak. Some of the most common ones are listed below:
