Language/Armenian/Grammar/Negation
Hi Armenian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about negation in the Armenian language. Negation is a very important part of any language, and it is essential to understand how to use it correctly.
Negation is the process of making a statement false by using words or phrases that indicate the opposite of what is being said. In Armenian, there are several ways to express negation.
The most common way to express negation in Armenian is to use the word ոչ (och). This word is used to negate verbs, adjectives, and nouns. For example:
Armenian | Pronunciation | English Translation |
---|---|---|
Ես չեմ անում | Yes chem anum | I don't want |
Այն չէ | Ayn che | It isn't |
Այդ չէ ճիշտ | Ayd che chisht | That's not right |
Այս չէ համարական | Ays che hamarakan | This isn't appropriate |
Another way to express negation in Armenian is to use the word չէ՞ (che?). This word is used to ask questions in the negative form. For example:
Armenian | Pronunciation | English Translation |
---|---|---|
Դու չէ՞ անում | Du che? anum | Don't you want? |
Այն չէ՞ | Ayn che? | Isn't it? |
Այդ չէ՞ ճիշտ | Ayd che? chisht | Isn't that right? |
Այս չէ՞ համարական | Ays che? hamarakan | Isn't this appropriate? |
Finally, you can also use the word չէք (chek) to express negation in the first person plural form. For example:
Armenian | Pronunciation | English Translation |
---|---|---|
Մենք չէք անում | Menk chek anum | We don't want |
Այն չէք | Ayn chek | We don't have it |
Այդ չէք ճիշտ | Ayd chek chisht | That's not right for us |
Այս չէք համարական | Ays chek hamarakan | This isn't appropriate for us |
