Galician Grammar - How to Ask Questions

Hi Galician learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing how to ask questions in Galician. Asking questions is an important part of any language, and it can be tricky to get the hang of it. But don't worry, with a bit of practice you'll be able to ask questions like a native speaker in no time!

Basic Question Structure

The basic structure for asking questions in Galician is very similar to English. To form a question, you start with the verb and then add the subject. For example:

  • Falas galego? (Do you speak Galician?)
  • Vai á praia? (Are you going to the beach?)

Yes/No Questions

Yes/no questions are the simplest type of questions. To form a yes/no question, you just need to add the word cales at the end of the sentence. For example:

  • Falas galego cales? (Do you speak Galician?)
  • Vai á praia cales? (Are you going to the beach?)

Wh-Questions

Wh-questions are more complex than yes/no questions. To form a wh-question, you need to use a wh-word at the beginning of the sentence. The most common wh-words are quen, que, cando, onde, por que, and como. For example:

  • Quen fala galego? (Who speaks Galician?)
  • Que vai facer? (What are you going to do?)
  • Cando vai á praia? (When are you going to the beach?)
  • Onde vives? (Where do you live?)
  • Por que fas iso? (Why are you doing that?)
  • Como se di iso en galego? (How do you say that in Galician?)

Tag Questions

Tag questions are used to confirm information or to ask for confirmation. To form a tag question, you need to add the word verdade at the end of the sentence. For example:

  • Falas galego, verdade? (You speak Galician, right?)
  • Vai á praia, verdade? (You're going to the beach, right?)

Conclusion

Asking questions in Galician is not as difficult as it may seem. With a bit of practice, you'll be able to ask questions like a native speaker in no time!
