Yue Chinese Grammar - How to Ask Questions

Hi Yue Chinese learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be learning how to ask questions in Yue Chinese. Asking questions is an important part of any language, and it can help you to communicate more effectively with native speakers. We will cover the different types of questions, as well as how to form them correctly.

Types of Questions

There are two main types of questions in Yue Chinese: yes/no questions and wh-questions.

Yes/No Questions

Yes/no questions are used to ask for a simple yes or no answer. They usually start with a verb or an auxiliary verb. For example:

  • 你會講粵語嗎?(Do you speak Yue Chinese?)
  • 你喜歡吃蝦嗎?(Do you like to eat shrimp?)

Wh-Questions

Wh-questions are used to ask for more detailed information. They usually start with a question word such as 幾 (how many), 點 (when), 邊 (which), etc. For example:

  • 你點時去旅行?(When are you going on vacation?)
  • 你邊個地方去?(Which place are you going to?)
  • 你幾多歲?(How old are you?)

Question Word Order

When forming a wh-question, the question word should always come first, followed by the verb. For example:

  • 你點時去旅行?(When are you going on vacation?)
  • 你邊個地方去?(Which place are you going to?)

Tone Change

When asking a question in Yue Chinese, the tone of the final syllable of the sentence changes. For example:

  • 你會講粵語嗎?(Do you speak Yue Chinese?)

The tone of the final syllable (語) changes from a high tone (ㄩˋ) to a rising tone (ㄩˊ).

Summary

In this lesson, we have learned about the two main types of questions in Yue Chinese: yes/no questions and wh-questions. We have also learned about the correct word order for wh-questions, and the tone change that occurs when asking a question.
