Vietnamese Grammar - How to Ask Questions

Hi Vietnamese learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing how to ask questions in Vietnamese. Asking questions is an important part of any language, and it can be tricky to get the grammar right. But don't worry, by the end of this lesson you will have a good understanding of how to ask questions in Vietnamese.

Basic Question Structure

The basic structure for asking questions in Vietnamese is quite simple. All you need to do is add the word 'có' at the end of the sentence. For example:

  • Anh ở đâu? (Where is he?)
  • Anh có ở đâu? (Where is he?)

As you can see, the only difference between a statement and a question is the addition of the word 'có'.

Yes/No Questions

Yes/no questions are questions that can be answered with either 'yes' or 'no'. To form a yes/no question in Vietnamese, you need to add the word 'có' at the beginning of the sentence. For example:

  • Anh ở đâu? (Where is he?)
  • Có anh ở đâu? (Is he somewhere?)

You can also use the word 'không' to make a negative yes/no question. For example:

  • Anh không ở đâu? (Is he not somewhere?)

Wh-Questions

Wh-questions are questions that start with a 'wh-' word such as 'what', 'where', 'when', 'why', 'who', 'which', 'how'. To form a wh-question in Vietnamese, you need to add the 'wh-' word at the beginning of the sentence. For example:

  • Anh ở đâu? (Where is he?)
  • Ở đâu anh? (Where is he?)

You can also use the word 'sao' to ask 'why' questions. For example:

  • Anh làm gì? (What is he doing?)
  • Sao anh làm? (Why is he doing it?)

Tag Questions

Tag questions are questions that are added at the end of a sentence. To form a tag question in Vietnamese, you need to add the word 'không' at the end of the sentence. For example:

  • Anh ở đâu? (Where is he?)
  • Anh ở đâu không? (Where is he, isn't he?)

You can also use the word 'có' to make a positive tag question. For example:

  • Anh ở đâu? (Where is he?)
  • Anh ở đâu có? (Where is he, right?)
