Jamaican Creole English Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Jamaican Creole English learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in Jamaican Creole English. Adjectives are words that describe or modify other words, usually nouns and pronouns. They can also be used to compare two things.

Adjective Formation

Adjectives in Jamaican Creole English are formed by adding the suffixes -ful, -less, -able, -ible, -ous, -ish, -y, -al, -ic, -ive, -ary, and -ed to a noun or verb. For example, the noun “beauty” becomes the adjective “beautiful” when the suffix -ful is added. Similarly, the verb “help” becomes the adjective “helpful” when the suffix -ful is added.

Adjective Placement

In Jamaican Creole English, adjectives usually come before the noun they modify. For example, “a beautiful flower” and “a helpful friend”. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, when using the adjectives “same” and “such”, they come after the noun they modify. For example, “the flower same” and “the friend such”.

Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

Comparative adjectives are used to compare two things. They are formed by adding the suffix -er to the adjective. For example, “tall” becomes “taller”. Superlative adjectives are used to compare three or more things. They are formed by adding the suffix -est to the adjective. For example, “tall” becomes “tallest”.

Adjective Agreement

In Jamaican Creole English, adjectives must agree with the nouns they modify in gender and number. For example, if the noun is singular and feminine, the adjective must also be singular and feminine. If the noun is plural and masculine, the adjective must also be plural and masculine.
