Kinyarwanda Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Kinyarwanda learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in Kinyarwanda. Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns. They can be used to give more information about the noun or pronoun they are modifying. In Kinyarwanda, adjectives are usually placed after the noun or pronoun they are modifying.

Types of Adjectives

There are two types of adjectives in Kinyarwanda: descriptive adjectives and possessive adjectives.

Descriptive Adjectives

Descriptive adjectives are used to describe the qualities of a noun or pronoun. Examples of descriptive adjectives in Kinyarwanda include:

  • kabiri (big)
  • kimwe (small)
  • kimwe mu bijyanye n'umuriro (short)
  • kabiri mu bijyanye n'umuriro (tall)
  • kimwe mu bijyanye n'amavuko (thin)
  • kabiri mu bijyanye n'amavuko (fat)

Possessive Adjectives

  • wanjye (my)
  • wawe (your)
  • yawe (his/her)
  • zawe (our)
  • zawe (their)

Adjective Agreement

In Kinyarwanda, adjectives must agree with the noun or pronoun they are modifying in gender and number. For example, if the noun or pronoun is singular and masculine, the adjective must also be singular and masculine. If the noun or pronoun is plural and feminine, the adjective must also be plural and feminine.

For example:

  • Umuntu kabiri (a big person)
  • Abantu kabiri (big people)
  • Umukobwa kimwe (a small girl)
  • Abagore kimwe (small girls)
