Bosnian Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Bosnian learners! 😊 In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in Bosnian. Adjectives are words that describe nouns and pronouns. They can be used to describe the size, shape, color, or other qualities of a noun or pronoun. We will look at how to form adjectives in Bosnian, as well as how to use them in sentences.

Formation of Adjectives

Adjectives in Bosnian are formed by adding suffixes to the root of the word. The suffixes depend on the gender and number of the noun or pronoun being described.

Masculine Singular

For masculine singular nouns and pronouns, the suffix -i is added to the root of the word. For example, the adjective "big" is veliki in Bosnian.

Feminine Singular

For feminine singular nouns and pronouns, the suffix -a is added to the root of the word. For example, the adjective "big" is velika in Bosnian.

Neuter Singular

For neuter singular nouns and pronouns, the suffix -o is added to the root of the word. For example, the adjective "big" is veliko in Bosnian.

Masculine Plural

For masculine plural nouns and pronouns, the suffix -i is added to the root of the word. For example, the adjective "big" is veliki in Bosnian.

Feminine Plural

For feminine plural nouns and pronouns, the suffix -e is added to the root of the word. For example, the adjective "big" is velike in Bosnian.

Neuter Plural

For neuter plural nouns and pronouns, the suffix -a is added to the root of the word. For example, the adjective "big" is velika in Bosnian.

Using Adjectives in Sentences

Once you know how to form adjectives in Bosnian, you can use them in sentences. Adjectives usually come before the noun or pronoun they are describing. For example:

  • Veliki auto - Big car
  • Velika knjiga - Big book
  • Veliko drvo - Big tree

Adjectives can also be used after certain verbs, such as biti (to be) and imati (to have). For example:

  • Auto je veliki - The car is big
  • Knjiga je velika - The book is big
  • Drvo je veliko - The tree is big

Adjectives can also be used to compare two things. To do this, you use the comparative form of the adjective. For example:

  • Auto je veći od knjige - The car is bigger than the book
  • Knjiga je manja od drveta - The book is smaller than the tree
