Northern Thai also called Lanna or Lanna Thai after the ancient kingdom of Lanna, or Kham Muang after its name in Thai, is a language of the Tai group, of the so-called Kam-Tai branch of the Tai-Kadai language family. It is spoken in the northwest of Thailand. Northern Thai is closely related to Thai proper or Siamese, the official language of Thailand under the name "Thai". Both belong to a subgroup of Tai languages called Chiang Saeng (named after a locality in the Golden Triangle, northern Thailand).
