Mohawk (self-name Kanien'kehá:ka, “People of the Flint”) is a language spoken in Canada and the United States. It is part of the Iroquoian language family of the native peoples of Canada.
It has about 3,350 speakers, most of whom are elderly, though there are younger speakers in some areas.
Mohawk is spoken by approximately 15% of the 15,500 Mohawks who reside in Quebec, Ontario and New York State.
In Quebec, this language is spoken by three communities: those of Kahnawake, Kanesatake and Akwesasne.
Mohawk has three main dialects: Western (Ohswé:ken and Kenhté:ke), Central (Ahkwesáhsne), and Eastern (Kahnawà:ke and Kanehsatà:ke); their differences are mainly phonological. They have been linked territories since the 18th century. The pronunciation of the phoneme /r/ and a consonant cluster can be different among dialects.
