All nouns ave a gender

In the Bulgarian language all nouns have a grammatical gender – masculine, feminine or neuter. It is usually indicated by the ending of the word.


Ending for masculine nouns

The typical ending for masculine nouns is a consonant or -Й. Exceptions: There are some masculine nouns ending in a vowel: баща, чичо, дядо.

-й  чай

Ending for femine nouns

The typical ending for feminine nouns is -A or -Я. Exceptions: There are some feminine nouns ending in a consonant: сутрин, вечер, нощ, пролет, есен, любов, обич, помощ, захар, сол. There is a group of feminine abstract nouns ending in -ОСТ, -ЕСТ, -АСТ: радост, младост, старост, хубост, болест, възраст.

Ending for neuter nouns

The typical ending for neuter nouns is -Е or -О. Exceptions: There are some neuter nouns ending in -И, -У or -Ю. They are usually international words: такси, бижу, меню.


едно
-е  кафе
-о  село
