2 types of conjunctions in Armenian

In Armenian there are two types of conjunctions: coordinating and subordinating.

Coordinating conjunctions tie together equal parts of a sentence, whereas subordinating conjunctions are used to connect a principle clause and a secondary clause.

Main coordinating conjunctions of the Armenian language

The chart below contains the main coordinating conjunctions of the Armenian language:

Conjunction	Translation	Examples
և, ու	and	Նա դուռը բացեց և մտավ սենյակ: He opened the door and entered the room.
բայց	but	Մենք փորձեցինք բացել դուռը, բայց չկարողացանք: We tried to open the door but couldn’t.
իսկ	and/while/but	Դասախոսը հարցեր է տալիս, իսկ ուսանողները պատասխանում են: The lecturer asks questions, while the students answer them.
թե	օr (exclusive)	Գալի՞ս ես, թե՞ ոչ: Are you coming or not?
կամ	օr (inclusive)	Վաղը կգտնենք այդ մարդուն, կամ կգնանք Վանաձոր։ Tomorrow we will find that man, or we will go to Vanadzor.
սակայն	yet, however	Տարօրինակ է, սակայն ճշմարիտ է: It is strange, yet true.
և՛ …. և՛	both…and	Նրանք սիրում են և՛ խաշ, և՛ տոլմա: They like both khash and dolma.
կամ … կամ	either...or	Կամ շունն է կերել դա, կամ կատուն: Either the dog or the cat has eaten it.
ոչ … ոչ	neither…nor	Ես ոչ լսել եմ այդ մասին, ոչ էլ լսելու ցանկություն ունեմ։ I have neither heard about that, nor I want to hear.

Main subordinating conjunctions of the Armenian language

The chart below contains the main subordinating conjunctions of the Armenian language:

Conjunction	Translation	Examples
եթե	if	Եթե նրան խնդրեք, նա ձեզ կoգնի: If you ask him, he will help you.
թե արդյոք	whether	Չգիտեմ, թե արդյոք նա կկարողանա գալ: I don’t know whether she will be able to come.
որ	that	Նա ասաց, որ կգա: She said that she would come.
որովհետև	because	Ես չեմ կարող գալ, որովհետև չափազանց զբաղված եմ: I can’t come because I am too busy.
որպեսզի	so that, in order to	Ավելի մոտեցրեք դա, որպեսզի կարողանամ ավելի լավ տեսնել: Bring it nearer so that I can see it better.
մինչև	until	Եկեք սպասենք մինչև անձրևը դադարի։ Let’s wait until the rain stops.
քանի որ	since, as	Քանի որ նա պատրաստ չէր ժամանակին, մենք առանց նրա գնացինք։ Since he wasn’t ready in time we went without him.
