Grammar: Enonciative pronouns in Wolof

Wolof-Enonciative-Pronouns-PolyglotClub2.jpg

Examples

  • Am naa 1 mag ci Amarik

I have 1 sibling in the US.

  • Bëgguma jëkkër ci Senegal

I don’t want a husband in Senegal.

Notes

  • The enonciative pronouns give us one of the way to conjugate a static verb in the present tense (am naa xarit ci Cees = I have a friend in Thies).the difference from the English lays first in the structure that is design above in the shart, there’s no distinction in the third person singular.
  • When using two verbs in a row, leave the second verb unconjugated (mën naa wax Wolof tuuti = I can speak Wolof a bit).
  • You will see in further lessons that the enonciative pronouns can be used with the active verbs when you want to conjugate them in the past tense (jang naa Wolof ci universite = I learnt Wolof at university.
