Popular Basque Festivals and Celebrations
If there is one thing that is apparent to visitors of the Basque Country, it is the passion that the Basque people have for their traditions and celebrations. Despite the many changes that the region has undergone over the years, these traditions are still very much alive, and are celebrated with enthusiasm and pride.
The Basque people are deeply rooted in their culture, and this is never more apparent than during their many festivals and celebrations. From San Fermin to Semana Grande, these events are a true celebration of everything that makes the Basque people unique.
San Fermin
The most famous Basque festival is, of course, San Fermin, which is held each year in Pamplona. The festival lasts for a week and attracts thousands of visitors from around the world.
The highlight of the festival is, without doubt, the running of the bulls. Each morning, six bulls are released into the streets, and hundreds of brave runners try to outrun them to the safety of the bullring.
But there is more to San Fermin than just the running of the bulls. The festival is also famous for its parades, fireworks, and street parties.
Semana Grande
Another popular Basque festival is Semana Grande, which takes place each year in Bilbao. This festival lasts for nine days and is a time of music, dance, and celebration.
One of the most popular events at Semana Grande is the International Fireworks Competition, which is held each night over the estuary. Teams from around the world come to Bilbao to compete, and the fireworks displays are truly spectacular.
Other highlights of Semana Grande include the Basque Strongman Championships, the Basque Rowing Championships, and the Basque Rural Sports Championships.
Carnival
Carnival is celebrated throughout the Basque Country, although the celebrations are more low-key than those in other parts of Spain.
However, there are still plenty of opportunities to join in the fun, with parades, music, and dancing taking place in many towns and villages throughout the region.
One of the most popular Carnival celebrations is in Tolosa, where the festival is known as Egunero. The town is famous for its traditional Basque costumes, and the streets are filled with music and dancing throughout the week-long festival.
St. Thomas' Day
St. Thomas' Day is celebrated in many Basque towns and villages on December 21st. The festival is a celebration of the winter solstice and the start of the Christmas season.
One of the most popular St. Thomas' Day celebrations is in the town of Irún, where the festival is known as Olentzero. This festival is named after a Basque character who is said to bring gifts to children on Christmas Eve.
The festival is celebrated with a parade through the streets, with villagers carrying an effigy of Olentzero and shouting "Zorionak!" ("Congratulations!") to passers-by.
Conclusion
The festivals and celebrations of the Basque Country are a true reflection of the spirit of the Basque people. They are a time of joy, celebration, and pride, and are a testament to the rich culture and heritage of this unique region.
Whether you're visiting during San Fermin, Semana Grande or any other festival, you are sure to be swept up in the energy and excitement of the occasion. So why not come and experience the celebrations for yourself and discover what makes the Basque Country such a special place?
