TeluguCulture → Telugu Festivals

As a Telugu language teacher for 20 years, I have always been fascinated by the rich culture and traditions of Telugu-speaking regions. In this lesson, we will learn about the major festivals celebrated in Telugu culture.

Harvest Festivals

The harvest season in Telugu-speaking regions is a time of joy and gratitude. Two of the major harvest festivals celebrated in Telugu culture are:

Sankranti

Sankranti, also known as Makar Sankranti, is celebrated in mid-January to mark the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of longer days. It is a four-day festival known for its colorful decorations, traditional foods, and kite-flying competitions.

Here are some common Sankranti greetings:

Telugu Pronunciation English
సంక్రాంతి శుభాకాంక్షలు Śaṅkrānti śubhākāṅkaṣalu Happy Sankranti
పాకం రాదు Pākaṁ rādu Enjoy the feast

Ugadi

Ugadi, also known as Telugu New Year, is celebrated in late March or early April. It marks the beginning of a new year and a new season. The day starts with a ritual bath, followed by the decoration of homes with mango leaves and the preparation of traditional sweets like Ugadi pachadi.

Here are some common Ugadi greetings:

Telugu Pronunciation English

Religious Festivals

Religion plays an important role in the lives of Telugu-speaking people. Here are some of the most important religious festivals celebrated in Telugu culture:

Vinayaka Chavithi

Vinayaka Chavithi, also known as Ganesh Chaturthi, is celebrated in honor of Lord Ganesha. It falls in August or September and is a ten-day festival of prayers, devotional songs and traditional foods. On the last day, the idol of Lord Ganesha is immersed in water.

Here are some common Vinayaka Chavithi greetings:

Telugu Pronunciation English

గణపతి బాప్పా మోర్యా Gaṇapati bāppā mōryā Victory to Lord Ganesha

Dussehra

Dussehra, also known as Vijaya Dashami, is celebrated across India, but with different traditions in different regions. In Telugu-speaking regions, it is a ten-day festival that commemorates the triumph of Lord Rama over Ravana, the demon king. People celebrate with colorful processions and the burning of effigies of Ravana.

Here are some common Dussehra greetings:

Telugu Pronunciation English
