What is the Armenian subjunctive mood?

The subjunctive mood is used for expressing desires. The subjunctive mood has two tenses: future and past.

How is used the Armenian Future Subjunctive?

The future subjunctive is used to indicate a wish or desire about the future. Often the word երանի - “if only”, or թող - “let”, “may” are used and placed in front of the verb. The word երանի often gets the exclamation mark “ ՜”. The word թող does not get the exclamation mark. The exclamation mark is placed on the last vowel of the word. In oral speech the words having the exclamation mark are prolonged.

1) Երանի վաղը հանդիպեմ Թոմին: If only I could meet Tom tomorrow.

2) Թող բոլոր երեխաները երջանիկ լինեն։ Let all children be happy. The word թող is used only with future subjunctive.

clauses of condition

Verbs in future subjunctive form are also used in clauses of condition and after conjunctions like: եթե - “if” , թե- “if/or”, որ - “in order to”, and որպեսզի - “so that.

1) Եթե լավ սովորես, բարձր գնահատականներ կստանաս: If you study well, you will receive high grades.

2) Դանդաղ ասա, որպեսզի հասկանամ: Say it slowly so I understand.

3) Գնում եմ խանութ, որ հաց գնեմ: I am going to the store to buy bread. 4) Նա ուզում է, որ նրանք շուտ որոշեն: He wants them to decide quickly.
